<title>Update on the situation in Gaza from The Rt Revd Suheil Dawani</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/news.cfm/2009/1/8/ACNS4556</link>
<description>

Jerusalem, January 7th, 2009&amp;nbsp;- At a time when great tragedy is occurring in the Holy Land in Gaza, I want to share some insight into what we are experiencing on a moment to moment basis. Our Diocese has one of 11 hospitals serving a population of 1.5 million residents in the Gaza Strip. The Al Ahli Arab (Anglican) Hospital has been in operation for over 100 years and has a very dedicated medical staff of doctors, nurses, technicians and general services personnel.

<title>New prayers for those affected by redundancy published on CofE website</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/1/8/New-prayers-for-those-affected-by-redundancy-published-on-CofE-website</link>
<description>

The Church of England has published two new prayers to comfort people made redundant, and those remaining in the workplace following a round of redundancies, at the beginning of a year in which the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has predicted that at least 600,000 people could lose their jobs.
The &amp;lsquo;Prayer on being made redundant&amp;rsquo; helps to put into words the anxieties of those who are losing - or who have already lost - their job in the wave of recent redundancies. It includes the verse: &amp;ldquo;Hear me as I cry out in confusion, help me to think clearly, and calm my soul.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp;

<title>Church of Ireland Bishops&apos; Appeal Donates ¬25,000 to Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza City</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/1/7/Church-of-Ireland-Bishops-Appeal-Donates-25000-to-Al-Ahli-Hospital-Gaza-City</link>
<description>

The Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem operates the Al Ahli Hospital in the heart of Gaza City. It is providing essential frontline medical and emergency humanitarian services to those coming or being brought directly to it. Additionally, it is receiving patients transferred by UNRWA from the Government Hospital Al Shiffa for emergency inpatient and surgical treatment of the wounded and injured.&amp;nbsp;As a non-partisan well established hospital, it is receiving patients from all directions. The number of casualties arriving at the hospital in the present tragic situation is straining its resources and ability to cope almost beyond breaking point.

<title>Archbishop of Canterbury&apos;s New Year Message - the treasure that is our fellow human beings</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/news.cfm/2009/1/1/ACNS4554</link>
<description>

It&amp;rsquo;s always a relief to have a bit of space after the busyness of Christmas to relax at home and mull over the past 12 months and the hopes and possibilities of the year ahead. The prospect of this coming year, though, is one that produces a lot of anxiety and insecurity for countless people. There are fears about disappearing savings, lost jobs, house repossessions and worse. While the headlines are often about the big figures, it&amp;rsquo;s the human cost that makes it real for us.

Jerusalem - During recent weeks, the three Abrahamic Faiths have observed their Holy Seasons with a sense of peace and goodwill. Therefore, we are greatly grieved by the severity of the ongoing military operations in Gaza that are occurring in heavily populated areas and impacting the civilian population.

It was Christmas Eve and they kept coming, a steady flow, mostly young and obviously many were from far away places.&amp;nbsp;There was no room for me, well, not in the inn, but rather, no room in the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, known lovingly as Westminster Abbey.&amp;nbsp;They were standing everywhere. Human beings, left to themselves, have imagined God in all sorts of shapes; but&amp;nbsp;- although there were one or two instances, in Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt, of gods being pictured as boys&amp;nbsp;- it took Christianity to introduce the world to the idea of God in the form of a baby: in the form of complete dependence and fragility, without power or control.&amp;nbsp;

I am deeply pained by the terrible deterioration, disease and despair we are seeing in Zimbabwe.
I welcome signs that the South African government is alive to the implications of the total collapse of governance in Zimbabwe, of which we see new evidence daily.
But the silence of SADC leaders in general is disgraceful. Why throughout this crisis have we seen no evidence of public leadership from King Mswati III, chairperson of SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation?

<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2008/10/14/South-Africa-Facing-a-Human-Emergency</link>
<description>

An Article by Archbishop Njongo Ndungane

The State of the Nation is not just how the economy is doing, or how strong the Rand is. The State of the Nation is about how well the people of South Africa are doing. Are they able to live with dignity, able to feed their children, able to meet their basic needs, able to access employment, education, health care? According to the views expressed during the poverty hearings, the State of the Nation is dire. Communities are crippled by poverty. It is a state of emergency.

A recent uprising of rebel activity in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo has caused Bishop Henri Isingoma and 150 delegates of the Province de L&apos;Eglise Anglicane du Congo to be stranded in Boga following their September 30-October 5 diocesan synod.

<title>Pastoral Letter from the Bishop of Harare</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2008/10/9/Pastoral-Letter-from-the-Bishop-of-Harare</link>
<description>

Theme: God Our Refuge

Dear Sisters and Brothers

I am still under shock as I write this Pastoral letter. A young mother and her son about 10 years old appeared at the doorstep of our flat recently asking for food. After more than 40 years as a priest I know the difference between a professional street beggar and a hungry person genuinely asking for food. She was no street beggar at all. Going by her appearance she had not seen water to bathe for a long time. This young mother represents many others in our community today in Zimbabwe.

Our attitude towards people who have disabilities has changed over the past few decades - but there is still some way to go. That&amp;rsquo;s the view of the Diocese of Portsmouth&amp;rsquo;s disability working group.

Canon John L Peterson, Washington Cathedral
The Rt Revd David Beetge
When we received word last Friday in Jerusalem that Bishop David Beetge had died, there was total disbelief. Kirsten and I had spent a wonderful evening with Carol and David at the Lambeth Conference and although David was under treatment for Non-Hodgkin&apos;s Lymphoma, he looked great and was &amp;quot;vintage&amp;quot; David. It was a night of lots of laughter and recollection of the &amp;quot;good old days.&amp;quot;

<description>

Churches around the world mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity traditionally from 18-25 January between the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Each year, a different country is invited to write the initial worship material, which can be adapted for local use. In 2009, the Churches of Korea have written the material and the CTBI Writers Group has adapted it.

<description>

Proponents, opponents move immediately towards reorganization
Deputies to the 143rd diocesan convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh October 4 voted 240-102 to leave the Episcopal Church. Minutes later, in voice votes on three resolutions (Resolutions One, Two, and Three here) the deputies realigned the diocese with the Argentine-based Anglican Province of the Southern Cone and set up some initial procedures for accomplishing that maneuver. The vote was the culmination of the diocese&apos;s continuing theological disputes with the Episcopal Church and many diocesan leaders later said the decision put the diocese in what they called &amp;quot;the Anglican mainstream.&amp;quot;

<description>

The Journey of a New Monastic Community by Paul R. Dekar
For over a millennium, if Christians wanted to read theology, practice Christian spirituality, or study the Bible, they went to the monastery to do so. There, people who inhabited the tradition and prayed the prayers of the church, copied manuscripts and offered fresh reflections about living the gospel in a new era. Two thousand years after the birth of the church, a new monastic movement is stirring.

Christians and secular groups in India have commemorated the October 2 anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, but attacks against Christians continued on a day that marks the Indian independence campaigner&apos;s message of non-violence.
More than 100 Christian houses were torched in the troubled city of Kandhamal and nearby district of Boudh in the Orissa district as the nation prepared to celebrate the 139th anniversary of Gandhi&apos;s birth.

<description>

Statement by Bishop of London
For the last 10 days, many of us &amp;ndash; of all religions - have been praying for a breakthrough at the meeting of government heads today at the UN High Level Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs set out to halve global poverty by 2015.&amp;nbsp;The UN Secretary General has warned that, on present performance, the goals will not be met by the majority of countries who signed up to them.&amp;nbsp;It is up to those meeting in New York to live up to their promises to the world&apos;s poorest people, whose lives will be directly affected by the outcome. We are praying for all the leaders, including our own Prime Minister,that they will find the courage and unity needed to get achievement of the MDGs back on track.&amp;nbsp;We encourage Gordon Brown in his work at the UN today, and assure him of our support.
